Summer School Programs
Roll Out for DeSoto County Schools

"New Elementary Program and
Continued Programs for Middle/High Schools"

DeSoto County School District has three school programs for summer—one new program for elementary school students (grades 3-5), one for middle school students (grades 6, 7 and 8) and one for high school students (grades 9-12) called "Summer School." The elementary and middle school programs are called "Extended School Year—ESY."

All programs have fees since they are for remediation after the regular school year.

Elementary Extended School Year
The elementary summer school program is designed for any student who failed one subject with a grade of 60-64.  If a student fails more than one subject, he will not be able to attend unless those subjects were English and reading.  The summer program will be held at Horn Lake Intermediate School and Southaven Intermediate School, June 4-June 29 from 8 a.m. until 12.15 p.m. The fee is $200 for DeSoto County students, and $250 for out of district students.

Registration for this program will be held on June 1st  and  June 4th from 8 a.m. until 12 Noon.  Students must have a signed document from their principal before they register at either Horn Lake Intermediate or Southaven Intermediate Schools.  Hank Babin will be in charge of the Horn Lake Intermediate School program, and Dr. Janice Barton will supervise the program at Southaven Intermediate School.

"If skills are remediated, the student will be allowed to pass to the next grade," said Keith Williams, associate superintendent, who is heading the program.  "We anticipate the program serving as a 'credit recovery' type program.  We want to limit the students eligible so that we can truly meet their needs.  We do not want it to be a 'pay to pass' type program."

Williams explained that letters and registration materials went home with students who were eligible for the class. For additional information about this program, contact Williams at 662-429-5271.

Middle School Extended School Year
DeSoto County Schools will offer as extended school years (ESY) for middle school students at Southaven High School.  Registration will be June 15th from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The summer program will start June 18th-July18th, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

"Students can earn credits through the APEX Learning Credit Recovery Program.  Middle School students may earn two credits in ESY.  Transportation will not be provided," said Jeff Gilder, chief academic officer for middle schools.  "The cost will be $200 per class for DeSoto County students and $250 per class for out of district students (as space permits.)   Students must have payment (cash or money order) and the registration form with their counselor and administrator's signature at registration."

Gilder said if a student enrolls for a term, he must attend the full term and that no one will be excused for early mastery.

"The only students allowed to attend ESY are students who failed one or two subjects," Gilder said.  If a student in grades 6th, 7th, or 8th fails more than two subjects, he is not eligible for ESY."

Gilder added if a student fails 8th grade pre-algebra only, he has the following options:
     1.      Attend high school summer school at Southaven High School.
     2.      Take Pre-algebra through Mississippi Virtual Pubic School.
     3.      Repeat pre-algebra as a ninth grader.

"Students and parents should be aware of the math requirements for the 2012-2013 entering 9th graders," Gilder said.  "Students must have two math courses above Algebra I to graduate from high school."

For more information, contact Jeff Gilder at 662-429-5271.

Summer School and Driver's Education
Summer School for high school students will be held at one location for the district—Southaven High School.  Matt Smith will be the summer school principal for both the middle and high programs.

Registration will be held at SHS on June 1, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The cost is $200 per course for DeSoto County students and $250 for out of district students.  Transportation will not be provided.

Classes will be from June 4th to July 18th, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Students will earn credits through the APEX Learning Credit Recovery Program.  High School students can earn one credit each summer.

"All students register at Southaven High School, but must come to registration with a properly completed permission slip signed by their counselor or principal to enroll in the summer program," said Jim Ferguson, chief academic officer for secondary education.

Driver's Education will be offered at Southaven High and will cost $365.  Students must have payment (cash or money order) and the registration form with their counselor and administrator's signature at registration.
